Based on real life events that took place in the Appalachians, Beyond The Higher Ground takes an honest look at the opioid crisis in the United States, particularly the impact that the ongoing crisis is having on Americans living in small towns.
Getting Honest About The Opioid Crisis
“I wrote the book to highlight the devastating impact that opioids are having on people in rural America, with the hopes of people receiving the help that they need,” Thomas told Denise Turney, host of Off The Shelf Books Talk Radio.
Central to the story are Tucker Mason, the project manager leading the construction team that’s building a state prison in the small Appalachia town, and Jake, the father of a young man who died from a drug overdose. America’s destructive drug problem is not the only focus of Beyond The Higher Ground.
There’s a mystery embedded in the story, particularly the suspense around Jake’s drive to find and deal with the drug dealers who sold his son narcotics. Beyond The Higher Ground peels back the cover on a problem that has plagued the nation for more than a decade.
